June 11, 2K9 WACKY EVENT Corpus Christi Holiday rolled around in Trinidad & Tobago once again and, as is the norm, it is time to Lime! I guess come and Lime with Damion was appropriate even though he was not at the station but out on the field of play – that is the motto of the show right… come and lime with ‘Damion and Friends’. Well Pardna, the WACK crew decided to participate in an event that was carded to be a cake walk – easy pickings as Trini like to put it. However, not even the Body of Christ could have prevented the Cut Ass that was forthcoming. Hello, not even the Took-ah-Looks man could have anticipated the flogging meted out on this momentous day and nothing in his arsenal could have cured the cataract that blind-sided the WACK cricket team. This Lime went South and soured the event for the radio guys and gals – it was sour stomach on this day and one that would live in infamy for a long, long-time. So what really happened? Well from all accounts the following was picked up off the air: The WACK All-star Cricketers led by the venerable Kenny Phillips were pummeled today by blind cricketers. Indeed the sighted ones could not see their way even when, through pity, they were allowed to take off their “darkers” to see the ball and more importantly to save face. However, even this did not help as the WACK team humiliated themselves against a group of legally blind cricketers. The Fireman David Matthews was laughing his ass off in the studio because he knew that defeat was near for the proud ones who always boast, on air, about their triumphs on the sporting field. A valiant effort by Damion Melville was not enough to save the WACK cricket allstars from the severe trashing at the hands of the ‘blind merry men’. Kenny Phillips took the most wickets for the WACK team but then again the blind cricketers scored over two hundred runs. Do you think that you could you put a value to that award and would you step on the podium to receive it? Yikes, but I believe that Kenny was bold and brave enough to accept that award. WACK could not even come close to scoring 100 runs – talk about an embarrassing episode - good bowling Kenny ): Oh how the mighty ones have fallen from Glory. Kent was boasting on air today but probably was very happy to end his shift before the final score and sorrowful results were announced on air. At the time of this writing I did not hear anyone from the Titanic WACK Cricket Allstars rise to the occasion and speak on air to accept defeat -good cut-arse have ah way of putting a damper on things; in others words 'dem boi shame fuh so' and ran from being interviewed. But wait, what are we hearing now? REMATCH! Gosh this cut ass was enough … no more please. Addendum: June 12, 2K9 OK folks today Damion addressed the game and after listening to both Kenny and Damion I must give them credit for being fantastic ambassadors of goodwill and champions of great sportsmanship. No excuses were made and Damion admitted that they took the sport and this cricket team for granted. Indeed the game proved difficult and yuh could talk and laugh all yuh want but until you are in their shoes and facing the music you will understand that you could talk the talk but you must practice to walk the walk. Never take anyone or anything for granted folks... Oh and yes, Congratulations to the National Blind Cricketers on a splendid display of talent and sportsmanship/Wack will always have your back!
Pirates of the Caribbean may have been a movie but the word pirate and pirated are synonymous with illegal reproduction and sale of copyrighted material. Let's take into consideration pirated copyrighted music of artistes who seem to only stand a chance of earning a few dollars during the carnival season. However, what about the rest of the year and what about other sources of income? We all know that the police in conjunction with COTT are attempting to protect the 'blood sweat and tears' that the artistes put into their music. The pirates are very brazen and as soon as they are busted they are like Dracula rising out of the ashes to do their dirty deeds once again. Will it ever end? Do you really think that the pirates are the only guilty parties that suck the life-blood from the artistes? You will be surprised that they are not and one of our favorite sources of hearing the music is just as guilty. Ok now I want to turn my attention to the ones whom I consider to be the true pirates of the Caribbean. This applies from the top to the bottom of the chain of islands. To be honest, I am not privy to the law as it applies in any of these territories but in Trinidad they are finally getting the message. All the work done by the previous presidents of COTT in Trinidad is finally beginning to pay dividends in that the government is finally beginning to act. The police are beginning to do their part. However, there are those that the police cannot touch and are left to be monitored by COTT. I said ‘the true Pirates of the Caribbean’ and that applies to every radio station that is taking advantage of the Royalty free fiasco by hiding behind the claim of promoting the music of the artist – what a farce! Sneaky and conniving should be added to the mix. How many of you out there believe that radio stations are paying the artistes for the songs played or are they playing it off as a promotion of the artiste and his/her music and, as a result, are giving the artistes a so called break/exposure worth not having to pay the royalties – what a joke! Now this does not apply to the stations that are paying the royalties for the playing of copyrighted material. Those stations are the real heroes of the singers, song writers and record producers. Where are we in Trinidad today? I don’t know if COTT has set up any rules for radio stations profiting from copyrighted music. In the US, “a copyright appeals board set a rate of seven-hundredths of a cent per song, per listener. For many stations, run by music fans for music fans, that works out to thousands of dollars more than they make. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/techpolicy/2002-07-21-radio_x.htm. The result of this act led to the closure of many online stations but the reputable ones survived – over the air transmissions with the internet feed. Now that was a long time ago and since Trinidad and Tobago is heading for first World status it is only right that we all do the right thing – fair is fair. I don't know if the calculation of payment is a flat fee or if it pertains to 'sessions or hits to a website and general over the air airplay' that reflects the volume of listeners to a particular station. Whatever the formula is or should be requires that both the artiste and the station can survive. Stations that complain should instead focus of obtaining more advertisers to cover the cost of paying for the music and ensuring that there is a profit that ensures the survival and profitability of the station. As it pertains to the Calypso and Soca artistes in the Caribbean Region, they need and deserve every penny they can get for their hard work. Sometimes, I wonder when I hear radio jocks encouraging the listening public to only buy original copies of the compact discs if their station is paying the royalties due to the artistes for the music played on air or streamed over the internet to the international community – remember the music gives the station its identity! After all is said and done one is left to wonder who are the true Pirates of the Caribbean?

The Caribbean region is blessed with great musical talent and rhythms from the top to the bottom of the chain of islands. In Trinidad we are so proud of our Calypso, Soca and Chutney music but what about the other islands? What about Haiti? Today we will take a look at two videos, one is Zouk flavor while the other is the traditional Kompa beat … enjoy!

Jan04. 2K8. Kaiso boi, Kaiso boi now that was Kaiso! Did you feel it? Yes we are back to that same ole great feeling of Carnival, dancing and partying to the rhythms of Kaiso, Soca, Chutney and steel pan but last night was different. Kaiso House opened their doors to the new season with the hope of financial gain for the artistes chosen to perform at the tent. Of significance is the fact that I sat at home in Manhattan, NYC and took in the entire audio segment of the show – what else could one ask for? WACK radio 90.1 FM broadcast the opening with all the performances over the airwaves to the nation and streamed via the Internet to the rest of the World – fabulous! Do what you want, say what you want, trust ah Trini to critique and in this case not be satisfied with something. The WACK Shout box was jumping with action but a few were upset/dissatisfied with Bunji Garlin’s reincarnation of Maestro’s Fiery. I can understand the sentiment since no one to date has matched the style of the Maestro, so to speak. However, the youth movement is in good hands as far as I am concerned – well done Bunji! People need to understand that the performance at the tent is always different to that which one would hear from the recorded material for sale for many reasons. The important thing to note is that the artistes play to the mood of the audience – that is the beauty of attending the show at the tent. That is not translated via the broadcast even though Heshimu and Marlene did an excellent job interacting and bringing color to the ground breaking transmission for WACK. Saying 'thank you' is mandatory at this stage to the management of WACK for delivering true culture to our living rooms around the World. We will now keep looking at your site for a schedule of live broadcasts as we prepare to celebrate the Carnival season with our friends and families in the homeland.
Jan01. 2K8. The Carnival season may be short but the list of new music is very long. Mr. Desmond of WACK radio 90.1 FM fame jammed some of the new releases for the start of the New Year. Next up is Capshon and everyone knows that Capshon is the Soca King of the evening lime on WACK. So as you groove to the 2K8 future hits played by Deso be prepared to jam this afternoon with Capshon. Deso's style is Smooth and Cool but Capshon will rough up your ears with jamming Soca. I knew that the list of new tracks is long having seen and heard much of the new music on two of my favorite sites for Tingz Trini along with my favorite radio station: http://www.trinijunglejuice.com/socamusic.html & http://www.toronto-lime.com/index.htm and you can listen live with the DJ’s at http://wackradio901fm.com. Toronto Lime also has several lists to whet your appetite but nothing beats listening to a DJ interact with his/her audience as he/she plays the music. The DJ gives you the story behind the story and people like Deso, Capshon and meh boi Damion can add much spice to the music played. So as you wipe 2007 away from your sweaty brow make room to shake and wine to the latest of the greatest music on God’s Earth – Trini Soca forever!

No you don't say! Fabian Alphonso from the recording industry of Trinidad has questioned the regularity of air play given to certain artists on various radio stations. It was reported on WACK 90.1 FM news today, as stated by Mr. Fabian that 5% of the artistes get 95% of the air play while a paltry 5% get little or just token airplay. I have questioned the regularity of airplay of certain songs played on certain stations and have been shown the bull-pistle, so to speak, for stating the obvious. I listen to all the stations and hear songs played that I don't hear on the other stations. The question is who determines the play-list and more importantly the rotation of the songs played. Is it the station or is it up the on-air personalities? Criteria and you can be certain that there is no standard for this in Trinidad is in question. Who is to blame and what is the position of COTT and others responsible for the regulation of the recording industry and broadcasting in the homeland? The bottom line is we all have favorites and people request hearing a certain song several time per day but what is the policy of the stations regard this situation? The stations need to have a policy in place that equates fair-play for everyone concerned. If Mr. Fabian can complain then it means that people are upset and have complained about a lack of fair play. Carnival is here and fair-play could ensure a successful season for the artists, on the other hand a lack of fair play means that songs will not be heard around the World robbing the artistes of much needed income. I am certain many of these singers don't even get back the money spent to produce the music/compact discs. What is the moral responsibility of the stations or do they simply do that which is best for business? In the end all that one can ask for is some form of fair play so that it doesn’t smell like pay for play. Come clean and state your station's policy - the truth shall set you free!
Imagine you turned on your radio/computer to hear the latest Soca rhythms and you just managed to catch a piece of a ‘delicious’ track and right there you decide that you have to get it … I guess you will have to wait a while before you get to hear the name of the track and the singer again because not all the DJ’s/on air personalities provide the information before and/or after the song is played. There are so many new songs being released and played by the stations but very little information about the singer and song. Your next bet is to check the station’s website for a playlist, top ten/top 20 lists or a list of the most requested songs. Again frustration and you are left wondering how long it will be before you hear it again. Well this may just help, you can log on to http://www.trinijunglejuice.com/socamusic.html where you will find a list of the 2K8 releases with the song and artist listed. Oh and by the way, you can listen to the entire song … so until the administrators of these radio stations organize their websites to cater to the web surfers and artistes they will continue to experience missed opportunities to capitalize on the web rave. In the end it results in another opportunity lost - 'no web hits' mean no advertising dollars will follow.
Have you ever wondered why the Carnival dates are fixed to the Lenten dates? There are many articles online regarding Carnival and most point to the Greeks who started it all. Now, taking into consideration how financially viable the Carnival season is for the Calypso, Soca and Chutney artistes along with the Band leaders and Steel Orchestras wouldn't it be better to have a fixed date for the festivities? This year the Carnival season is very short and this is not financially viable for those who depend on the festival for the majority of their income. What is your opinion about a fixed date for the Carnival celebrations? Why can't we separate the Church from the festival? It would be a financial bounty for the country and everyone else who can earn income from the activities of the festival. However, doing so may anger the religious zealots. I am certain that this has been considered before but I believe it should be revisited for consideration.
Well, what do you know it is Kenny Phillips the head honcho at WACK radio! WACK radio is the 'numero uno' radio station for local content on the web and the airways of Trinidad. This man can do it all – businessman, musician, producer, arranger, publisher, engineer and former President of COTT. Now as you can see Kenny has a smile in the making on his face ... this photo was taken from TriniSoca.com. Can you give some feedback on the show that he played in and who put that cheeky smile on his face? I think I do, but go on the hunt and give some feedback. BTW Kenny, Santiwah was ah better name for your new band!
